The Blue Mansion Penang is the most famous stop in this colorful city. My trip to Penang, Malaysia completely exceeded my expectations. I was excited to discover the famous street art, but Penang turned out to be so much more than that. It’s a city with so much character and the most unique blend of cultures, colors, and tastes.

To match the mood of this exciting city, I chose to stay at Cheong Fatt Tze, also known as The Blue Mansion. I had seen countless photos of this beautiful boutique hotel, but as I walked in I realized that even the best pictures cannot do it justice.

The Blue Mansion Penang is such a stunning property, that I had to spend hours staring at all the intricate details and taking hundreds of photos before I head out to explore the city.

Cheong Fatt Tze began construction of The Blue Mansion in the 19th century. He chose only the best materials from around the world and made sure to keep the rich Chinese cultural heritage and design in his magnificent masterpiece. The Blue Mansion was completely restored in 1995, with careful attention to the original architecture, artwork, and design.

The Blue Mansion is actually one of the top touristic sites in Penang and tours are offered with a fee for visitors. As a hotel guest, I was offered a complimentary tour, which made me fall more in love with this one-of-a-kind property.

The hotel has only 18 luxury guest rooms categorized into 4 collections: the Liang collection, The Ming Collection (with direct pool access), the Tang suites, and the Han suites.

A brand new pool area has been added, which is a great place to cool off after exploring the streets of Penang in the warm weather.

Jetsetter recommendation: make sure to have at least half a day in your travel schedule to enjoy the hotel grounds.

The Rooms at The Blue Mansion Penang

All of the rooms are furnished with precious heirlooms and furniture dating back to the 19th century. I had the pleasure of staying in one of the Liang rooms called Towkay, where I felt I had traveled back in time.

What I loved the most is that the hotel has preserved so much of its old decor, but at the same time offers the comfort and 5-star amenities that made my stay so perfect.

My room felt like a museum with so many beautiful antique works of art. There was a big wooden desk and closet, which includes a TV and a minibar with complimentary refreshments.

Every day I would find fresh and delicious sweets on my desk, which I loved enjoying in the little seating area outside my room. This balcony looks down on the stunning courtyard and is the best place to enjoy a morning coffee.

The bathroom adds a bit of a modern and rustic charm to the room with white bricks, a large shower and luxury toiletries.

The Food: Courtyard & Indigo Restaurants

If you think that The Blue Mansion is all about architecture and design, then think again, because the food was one of the highlights of my stay. There are 2 dining options: The Courtyard and Indigo.

The Courtyard is where breakfast is served every morning. It’s so surreal to wake up and walk down to such a gorgeous courtyard and indulge in a delicious breakfast. There’s a menu where you can order hot dishes and a buffet that has lots of fresh fruits and pastries.

Indigo is a fine dining restaurant and is a must-try for anyone visiting Penang. The restaurant itself is of course beautifully designed and the dishes are filled with so much flavor. I enjoyed a very unique 4 course dinner, which I still think about to this day.

The Blue Mansion was one of the most special hotels I stayed in during my travels and I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else in Penang.

A big thanks to Cheong Fatt Tze The Blue Mansion for hosting my stay. As always, all opinions are my own.
