2 girls traveling the world by teaching
We are Being two lifelong friends with the same passion for helping others and seeing the world, we thought what could be a better opportunity than traveling abroad to teach children. To be more specific, we’re going to Italy in the Marche region to share our knowledge of education and to see the world.
Here’s a bit of information about us:
Shianne first: I’m a first grade teacher in Chicago, IL with 4 years of experience. I love to read, be active and try new things! I also have a secret love for completing puzzles! I’ve found that teaching is the most rewarding occupation I could imagine, and what better way to combine my two passions than by teaching children in a foreign country. Italy has always been a place that holds so many wonders to me and I cannot wait to completely immerse myself into the Italian lifestyle and experience everything it has to offer!
Next is Sarah: I am just a small town girl living in the big city of Chicago! I am an outdoor enthusiast and obsessed with experiencing new adventures. Teaching has been my career for the past 6 years but I am excited to begin my transition into nursing this fall. During my junior year of high school I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to France. This trip changed my perspective on the world in so many meaningful ways. I have been in a constant state of wanderlust ever since. Experiencing life in a foreign country, immersing myself in another community, while also making a difference, has always been a lifelong dream of mine. I am thrilled to head off to Italy to accomplish those personal goals!
We both applied for this program through GeoVisions, a company designed to give people like us an opportunity to both see the world and fuel our passion for teaching. Having been accepted into the program since November 2016, we are very eager for June to get here so we can begin our adventure! We will be staying in Porto Sant’Elpidio in the Marche region of Italy for 4 weeks.
The program itself is a summer camp for children who want to immerse themselves fully into learning the English language. We will be teaching Monday through Friday in the mornings (An exciting change from the normal school day atmosphere!).
Working with children is our main passion and why we sought this opportunity to begin with. Gaining the experience of teaching children within a different culture than our own is going to be the best reward we could ask for. This will provide us with a great understanding of what it’s like to grow up somewhere else in the world. Not only will this experience benefit the children in the camp, but it will also allow us to bring newly gained knowledge back home to continue sharing with others.
Since we’ll be there for 4 weeks, we will definitely have some extra time to explore the local Italian culture. This leaves our weekends and evenings open for adventures in nearby cities and regions. Being in the Marche region, this gives us ample opportunity to reach Florence, as well as weekend trips to Venice, Rome, and Milan.
While the big cities are great, we also want to go off the beaten path and see the real Italy, away from all of the touristy spots. Some of these spots include the Almafi Coast, the Frasassi Caves, Varenna, (Lake Como) and everywhere in between.
It’s important to us that we engage ourselves within smaller communities to experience a different way of life and find all of the unique delicacies in Italy. (a.k.a. the best gelato shop!) We hope that by learning about the different ways of life, we will be able to grow our appreciation for everything that surrounds us in this beautiful world!
We are incredibly excited for our adventure to begin. We have both been working towards a trip like this for a very long time and cannot wait to share all of the wonderful things we learn and experience while in Italy! We are wanderlusts at heart and know that this will only be the beginning of a lifelong adventure working with children all over the world!
